2009 Democratic Platform A FORCE FOR CHANGE
|

|
The Democratic Platform addresses the needs of Hammonton The main role of the Mayor
and Council is to develop and coordinate local policy. So it is
essential that candidates explain their approach to policy development and
specifically, what policies they hope to implement. I
wanted to take this opportunity to explain the policy views of myself and
my running mates, Mike Ammirato, James Scarpato and Carmen Villani.
Too often, local policy
degenerates into three categories: doing the same thing repeatedly
regardless of success, political gimmicks meant to secure votes for the
next election and doing the opposite of what your opponents recommend.
Perhaps, these may have worked in the past but such policies have no place
in the future. My running mates and I will evaluate national and
state- wide trends. Based on these trends, we create policy
customized to the needs, goals and values of Hammonton. Using this process, we have
developed a comprehensive platform for our campaign. We want
improve the local economy through investment in industries that have high
growth potential. We feel these industries are healthcare,
clean energy and conservation, and agriculture.
Just as the real estate boom kept taxes low, created jobs and
produced customers for our local businesses over the past six years, these
industries will do the same over the next decades. Investment
in these industries need not come through local property tax revenue but
through state and federal programs. Utilizing such programs also
demonstrates how we will approach grants. Grants must not be seen as
an endless supply of free money to be spent on every whim we have.
Rather, grants and aid must be viewed as “venture capital” to be
invested only on projects that bring a return on investment. My running mates and I also
realize that a primary purpose of a local government is to provide local
services. No one can deny the importance of police and emergency
services, trash pick-up, or water and sewer. The issue is how we
deliver services efficiently. Efficiency represents productivity
over cost. Since so many rising costs such as fuel are outside of
our control, we intend to focus on increasing productivity. We
will provide our municipal workforce with process improvement methods such
as those used by Fortune 500 companies to continuously increase
productivity and as a result improve efficiency. Instead of
giving into the ever-present temptation of micro-management, we will set
our local workforce up for success. Finally, we will work to
improve the quality of life for those in Hammonton that are often
over-looked: Veterans and the military, the elderly and shut-ins, and
individuals with special needs and their families. We will
partner with civic organizations, churches and charities to ensure that
every Hammontonian can live in this community with both dignity and a
sense of belonging. We must leave no one behind. Over the next several
weeks, I will go into further detail into each component of our platform.
My intent is two-fold. First, I hope to demonstrate that the local
Democratic platform represents a road-map to building a successful
community. Second, I hope to convince you that our platform is the
end-product of a group of individuals who have the skills necessary to
lead Hammonton in a 21st-century global economy. You can read our platform
in its entirety at our website: www.hammontondems.com.

Mayor Hammonton

5th District Candidate for Freeholder Sam Mento addresses "Meet the Candidates"
Thanks
Maria, for that warm introduction. First
off I would like to thank everyone for coming out tonight. I know this is a
very busy time of year. With a
Gubernatorial election and an exciting 5th district freeholder
race it can be difficult to get voters to focus on local politics.
This is a terrible, terrible mistake.
The local level is where the thousand little decisions are made that
affect our lives. It’s at Town Hall, not the Halls of Congress, that our
services have been cut. Or where our 100 year old trees have been cut down.
It is at the Town Hall that decisions are made that affect our
future, our children’s future and our grandchildren’s future.
So this year I ask you to vote the Democratic row from the bottom up.
There has never been more at stake.
With Joe Ingemi as Mayor, along with Mike, Carmen, and Jimmy on Town
Council, we will have the leadership in place to take Hammonton to the next
level.
On the county level, my running mate Angelo DeMaio and I are running
on a platform consisting of: I.
Open Government and fiscal
transparency... A
Post the budget on line, and have three public reading prior to approval B
Reach out to county employees for their input, to help them work more
efficiently. II
Better cooperation with the federal government, and President
Obama’s stimulus package to ease the burden of working class families in
the county. III.
Green Technology, I envision
Atlantic county as the green energy hub of all of NJ. Build a solar canopy
over the old Hammonton landfill, or using the vast tracts of farmland to
harness the power of wind. This will create jobs, clean energy, and reduce
our dependency on foreign fuel. IV.
Term limitations, unfortunately
when professional politicians get elected their first order of business is
to get reelected. Rather than
make tough decisions, they choose to count votes.
And that is why nothing gets done at the county level.
This is a belief George Washington took to his grave.
My opponent hasn’t gotten the job done in his first 15 years,
let’s not give him another three! Someone
once asked could a small group of committed people change the world? The
answer is: that is the only way the world has ever been changed.
One person stands up for what is right.
Then a dozen, then hundreds, then thousands.
So I’m you to take the first step and stand with us.
So when you leave this room tonight.
Go home and make a list of friends, relatives and neighbors to call
and tell them to vote for the Democrats this year.
From the bottom up. Sign
up for 2 yard signs (I say 2 because the 1st will probably be
stolen!) Seriously, volunteer to write a letter to the editor.
Or make a contribution.
I have no doubt that through your commitment we will sweep in
November.
